Includes the written part of my doctoral thesis plus five extra essays.
The original, Finnish version was published in 2005 and the English in 2007.

(An essay about various forms of violence.)

Cat
(An essay about "What are we allowed to do in the name of art and why?" using a work of mine as a case study.)

Art as Consummate Philosophy and Politics
(This is the second longest essay, also the credo of my doctoral thesis; it tries to formulate how art could be the most versatile and useful form of philosophical thinking and political action.)

Toolbox
(The artistic/philosophical/political potential of various disciplines – ranging from painting to poetry, performance, video and whatever – as seen from the inside, from the artist's viewpoint.)

Voodoo and Art
(An essay about the similarities and differences between West-African voodoo and West-European/North-American contemporary art and philosophy.)

I have also used texts in many of my visual works. These texts can be hand-written on my paintings, spoken word monologues in video works, words to music to be sung or for example text panels included in multipartite photo works. The texts are organic parts of these works, like the libretto of an opera or the poem of a lied are integral parts of the whole artwork. To see some of these combinations of pictures and texts, get the book, Teemu Mäki (Like, 2002, www.likekustannus.fi).

A compilation (37 pages) of text fragments, used as a part of the multipartite work DARKNESS VISIBLE (paintings, a video, texts, CDs of music) and also published as an autonomous text. It's quite extensive, but it is the best textual introduction to my work you can get without buying either of the aforementioned books.

CHRISTMAS NEVER COMES

Being not only an atheist, but even a relativist, I asked myself: "If I have no use for the (Christian) Ten Commandments, what can I offer instead?" So I came up with my commandments, for myself, and not more than nine of them. Has been published as an autonomous text, but usually it has been in circulation as the right panel of the Christmas Never Comes (diptych).
